What is TMS?
Benefits of TMS - Video
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a technological breakthrough in the treatment of depression.
As technology advances researchers are finding more ways to treat illnesses in the brain without medications.
During the TMS procedure, the patient wears a padded helmet which activates the magnetic pulses. These repeated magnetic wave pulses reach the areas of the brain which are affected by the patient’s particular illness.
How it works
Neural activity in areas of the brain known to be linked to mood regulation change when the brain is exposed to TMS therapy. A magnetic field created by the treatment coil attached to the patient’s head, where it triggers a fleeting burst of nerve cell activity. TMS modifies and corrects brain activity levels in depressed individuals, either by raising activity in areas of the brain that are underactive or by decreasing activity in areas that are hyperactive. Mild aftereffects such as a temporary headache may occur and after several weeks of treatment, depressive symptoms typically improve.
